I remember when I first moved to San Jose, some of the stores there made me feel deeply uncomfortable. Eventually I realized they were *too* tidy and clean. When I moved back to the South, I saw that even most expensive stores looked junky, with piles of stuff on the floor by noon. Now there are very few stores in my town I feel comfortable in, because they're too messy. Not the same as your experience, but I guess it boils down to being brainwashed about what we do and don't deserve as humans.
