It took me a long time to realize that one reason it can be hard to get people to move on from "the way things have always been done" is it's really, really hard to suggest a new way to do things without the people who have been doing things the old way hearing a critique of what they were doing. That's a skill I'm still working on, but one thing that helps is to go to bat for the incumbents when management asks why we're doing things that way, e.g. "that was state-of-the-art when this project was started, but now things have moved on."
