It's just unnecessary in the world of modern tooling.

I know some people hate it becuase it “stands out too much” which is… I dunno. Side effect of that “colour syntax highlighting” stuff I find completely illegible?

It's just unnecessary in the world of modern tooling. Most IDEs provide a variety of ways to easily see the matching tag for a closing tag. So it's just visual clutter.
