Most poor people do not get the benefits they qualify for https://mississippitoday.org/2022/10/05/mississippi-reject-most-welfare-applicants/

In addition, you're assuming that there's no benefit to making it financially feasible for people to stay home and take care of their own children rather than paying someone else to do so (the reason Welfare, now TANF, was created) or elderly relatives. It can cost $20/hr or more to have a caregiver come in and care for someone with dementia and/or mobility problems. Daycare is also very expensive, and it's people who will not care for children the way their parents were if they were able.

Perhaps there's a straight line between our policies which force people to abandon their parental responsibilities to others and adults who are devoid of both empathy and common sense.
