It’s the end of the month and you’ve used all your free member-only stories. Here are a few posts that are not member-only to tide you over till the 1st (or stretch your stories into next month).

Paid vs. Unpaid Posts

Medium authors that are part of the Partner Program have the choice to earn money on a post by checking a box when they publish it. Some authors check this box on all their posts, but I don’t.

Why not? When I started writing here, it didn’t occur to me to make money off of it until one of the publications approached me to publish one of my articles. So, I metered that article and a couple of others until Medium developed the policy that you had to have at least 100 followers to be in the Partner program and kicked me out.

I only put one of the posts that was previously behind the paywall back behind the paywall after I reached 100 followers, so many of my free posts are ones I wrote before hitting 100 followers. I also don’t put anything I write for Atlas UP behind the paywall, and I have a few posts I either think are too important to put behind the paywall or, conversely, I think it would be weird for someone to want to pay to read them.

How to Tell if a Post is Behind the Paywall

Before I bit the bullet and subscribed to Medium, I used to get really aggravated when I clicked a post and hated it and used up one of my free stories. I didn’t know how to tell up front if a post was paid or not. If you’re on the “For You” page or on the page of an author that interests you, you can see the difference between paid and unpaid posts by looking for the yellow “Member-only” icon.

Screen capture of two articles. The top one is not a member-only story and has no Member-only caption and icon, and the bottom one has a blue arrow pointing at a Member-only icon with caption.

The Posts

None of the posts below will use up your free stories, and you can read them even after you’ve run out of free stories to read.

Upcoming Posts (Most Will Probably be Behind the Paywall)

Here are some post ideas that are simmering in my head right now:

  • How To Work Around the Issues with React
  • My Best Practices for Using RTK Query
  • How to Super Charge Your Productivity with Jetbrains IDEs

How to Subscribe

At some point, it becomes more of a hassle to throttle your reading or keep switching browsers instead of just subscribing. If you get to that point, please use my affiliate subscription link. Part of your subscription fee will directly support my work.

Thanks for reading!
