The residents of the city are perpetuating the reverence past generations had for these awful people with their current tax dollars (you don't think those street signs paint themselves, do you?), so they have a right to decide they're not interested in doing that. Also, you do realize that saying "they weren't so bad for their time" is exactly white nostalgia, right?
