What's most chilling about your article is how similar what many Republicans say today is to what the conservatives of the pre-Civil War era said. One example that jumps out at me is all the complaining about how extended COVID unemployment benefits had the effect of allowing people to preserve their health by staying home sounds a lot like "they're stealing our slaves." And the LA sheriff who complained the parole board was releasing his "best workers" was pretty much literally saying that.
