When I lived in CA, my ex and I would not return to places with the passive-aggressive surcharge message. It's a cost of doing business, roll it into the price and move on.
Now, I eat out way less than I used to, and not just because the area where I live has no Santana Row. My New Year's resolution this year was to reduce food waste, and over time that has morphed to reducing waste in general. Most restaurants serve portions that are far too large, leaving you with the choice of bringing home your leftovers in a single-use container or throwing them out. Not to mention the gas and time involved in going to and from.
I really love that my farm-to-table is going out the back door and looking to see what's ripe today and figuring out how to use that.
