You missed the most important point, which is don't focus on the work to the extent you ignore the social aspect of your job. If a layoff decision has to be made, many times the decision will be made on the basis of who the decision-maker values, personally, and is most sympathetic to vs. who is actually doing the most impactful work. So be sure to make sure that your coworkers, especially those above you, like you, and market yourself internally so people recognize your value. Don't assume that just because you've put out nearly every fire for the last year that you'll survive when the person who set all those fires will not. If that person is a better schmoozer and manages to paint fire-setting in a good light, you will get the axe while they stay.
